Sunday Funday Adventure Sail: Treasure Island or Bust!

5/4/2025

Our first-ever Sunday Funday Adventure Sail was nothing short of EPIC!

A bold crew of nine sailors set their sights on Clipper Cove and, despite a few capsizes, a little seasickness, and an uncooperative current, we made it! The determination was real—and the adventure unforgettable.

We kicked off the day at the ACSC site around 9 AM with a safety briefing, then rigged boats, packed lunches and gear into the safety boats, and set sail by 10:30 AM. It was a breezy upwind climb—some hadn’t sailed in over a year, so we needed to warm up our sealegs. By the time we reached Alameda Point, everyone had found their groove.

Staff briefly floated the idea of detouring to Seaplane Lagoon for lunch, but the sailors were clear: Treasure Island or bust!

By 1 PM, we glided under the eastern span of the Bay Bridge—an awe-inspiring view no matter how many times you’ve seen it. By 1:30, all boats were beached at Clipper Cove, and we stretched out for lunch, sunscreen reapplication, and some well-deserved rest.

Then came the journey home... The wind took an unexpected break, leaving us to drift backwards under the bridge. After a few scenic zigzags between the northern and southern sides of Yerba Buena Island, we made the call to switch gears and enjoy a relaxing tow back.

Big Zod (our 21-foot Zodiac) and Black RIB (our Zodiac 500) each took two boats in tow and ferried the sailors across the South Bay, back toward the USS Hornet. The tow itself? Quiet. But the wildlife? Incredible. We spotted harbor seals, dolphins, and even a WHALE!

We learned a lot to make the next Sunday Funday even better, and we’re already stoked to do it again.

Keep an eye out for future Sunday Funday Adventure Sails. Treasure Island, we’re coming back (this time with the current on our side)!
