ACSC Construction Project NewsApril 2nd and 3rd, the Alameda Community Sailing Center was buzzing with activity that had been months in the planning. This year, we added a ton of ‘organization’ to the organization! Shelving, wetsuit drying/storing section, drop down work bench, rolling carts for rudders, daggerboards and mast/spar assemblies...

We had over 20 volunteers led by Cecilia Trost (read about her in our Volunteer of the Month) who worked extremely hard on this project. Thanks to Board members Dan Leininger, Mike Bishop, Kame Richards, Rich Jepsen, Nancy Hird and Doug Perry, volunteers Sally Richards, Brian Schumacher, Dave Lyman, Andy Abadia and Melissa Abadia, Richard Christman and Ken Carvallo, all of whom put in substantial time. Special thanks to Sally Richards for two beautiful lunches, with delicious desserts, fit for a restaurant and Cecilia Trost, for her hundred hours of planning as the project manager for construction. A big part of the project was handled by some Eagle Scout candidates as a community service project, led by Miles Abadia, and coached/mentored by Cecilia. They built four super strong carts to store and organize rudders, daggerboards and sail/spar assemblies. Believe me these will be greatly appreciated this summer.
The Scouts who helped: Miles Abadia, project team leader, Charles, Malik, Mutazz, Aaron, Christopher, Jake. Thanks, guys, you are already proving you are great citizens! The volunteer time was several hundreds of hours in the name of getting kids and adults out enjoying San Francisco Bay!
This couldn’t have happened without the generosity of the following firms:
  • Truitt and White Lumber and Hardware – all lumber was donated and all plywood was ripped to specifications at no charge. It also offered at deep discount all the shelf supports, from 12” to 24” deep shelves.
  • Bay Bolt – all fasteners from the smallest shelving screws to the large machine and lag bolts needed for the rough construction were donated. Bay Bolt’s owner, Mr. Anderson, is actively involved in Scouting and was the force behind this generosity.
  • Faction Brewery – a fervent (ferment?) benefactor of Alameda Community Sailing, for donating a keg of great beer.
Thank you to all our sponsors! We are becoming a much better organization for your efforts!
If you want to see more of our improvements, consider visiting us on May 21 for our Sailing Extravaganza! There will be open sailing and BBQ as well as tours of the improvements! Bring flat rubber soled shoes and clothes that can get wet so we can take you sailing!
